Wire Project: Mask
Piece Statement
The object that I am conveying in wire is a self-made Chinese Kabuki mask. This is a piece that I had made outside of class in beginning ceramics. A Kabuki mask is a type of stylized mask that was used in the traditional Japanese drama. Kabuki is also a word that means singing dancing art. These masks can be shown with a painted wide mouth as well as having a wide variety of color. I chose to work from this piece, because I have an interest with how masks look, whether how they are shaped and formed, or what designs that I like. I felt proud when I crafted the original as to how I laid out the initial shape as well as the pattern that is carved into the form and not just painted. The design that is on the original mask can be easily shown on the wire duplicate as spaces that are open. This was to create a sense of size and differentiation of what color was what on the original mask, but not completely give of the presence of a face. The wire that runs throughout the piece is strong in showing the form in a quick and gestural way.
